Believe me; it is really difficult to potty train an adult or older dog than to train a puppy.
I have had really nasty experience while dealing with an older dog that I adopted from one of my friends who was not able to take care of this dog.
First thing we should remember is that just as humans, it is easier to teach an older dog to do something, instead of not doing something.
This dog had the old habit of doing it inside and I knew that it would be really hard for me to eliminate this habit.
So, I first decided to spend a great deal of time with him and develop a sense of confidence in him so that he tries to do what I want him to do.
I got a nice crate for him, that was just enough for him to rest comfortably and not large enough for him to ease himself as and when he wants.
As soon as I gave him food, I started taking him outside to the place where I wanted him to ease himself every time he wants to. This was a small corner in the lawn. You have to be persistent and take your older dog to this same place over and over again as it would help the dog learn the right place faster.
Also make sure that you do not clean the spot thoroughly until your dog learns to go to the same place when it needs to go potty.
Another important thing is to use the same command while you are referring to potty. An older dog tends to get confused if you use different phrases.
Your dogs’ sense of smell is really very keen and the smell of urine or excrement in your house will make it think that it is the place to go potty.
So make sure that you do remove every trace of potty accident inside the house by using deodorizing cleaning solution to eliminate odors from your floors. As I had mentioned earlier, keep your dog in a crate and let him sleep there itself.
This will ensure that he gets used to his crate which would become like a den for him and he would not defecate or urinate inside the crate. As soon as he wakes up, take him outside to the same spot where you want him to ease himself.
Every time you do this, it would make him understand that he needs to go out and attend to nature’s call and not inside his home.
Lastly, do not feed your older dog or give him plenty of water just before he goes to sleep as it might be difficult for him to control himself and he might unintentionally ease himself inside the crate.
With a lot of patience you can definitely help your older dog learn to go outside and attend to nature’s calls and always remember that you need to praise him a lot and give him tons of love as he is a part of your family and just like your kid, you need to teach him good habits that take precious time but is genuinely rewarding.
Guide to dog potty training Before I start talking about training; you should know that every dog is different.
Before you start the training, determine what motivates your dog the best. Whether it be praise, food, or toys; find your tool.
Never use violence to train your dog.
Tips for potty training puppies
1. Have a designated potty place. You can buy pet pads that are like absorbent dippers or pet pads that are like pads of grass (this is my favorite)
introduce your dog to this pad and make it a fun place by giving him food there or playing with him.
2. When your doggie starts to go to the bathroom pick him up and carry him to the puppy pad. Give him a reward if he successfully pees on the pad. (to avoid this step altogether, time his eating and peeing habits so you can predict when he needs to pee; and just carry him over to the pad before he instigates it. A six- to eight-week-old puppy should be taken to the pad every one to three hours.)
3. Be consistent. Once you begin to know his schedule, bring him over to the pad at a designated time. Make sure to reward him every time he does it right.
4.If you want to avoid long waits you may want to create a potty command. Use a single to double syllable word (so he can comprehend it) and use a hand gesture. Some examples are potty and bathroom.
After time you will see you puppy begin to sniff and prepare to pee after you give the command.
5. To train him to go outside to pee, put the pad outside one he gets used to peeing on it. You may remove it when you feel he can handle the change.
6. Keep in mind some dogs are smarter than others when it comes to training. It is always best to star young with you training because potty training puppies is easier.
If your dog is one of these ‘hard to train dogs’, you may want to use a crate.
Get your dog used to the cage and leave him in it after dinner until he does his business. Good luck! And have fun house training your dog!

If you have already started with the obedience training, he will understand the commands and stop till further instructions.

house training a dog can be hard work if you aren’t diligent about the process. Puppies are easily trained and it only takes a little consistency to potty train a puppy.
Here are a few tips that will hopefully help you if you’re going through this right now.
If puppies don’t eat, they don’t poo. No, I’m not saying “don’t feed your dog!” The reverse of this says that when they do eat, they poo.
Get on a feeding schedule with your puppy. Dogs should be fed twice a day. Thirty minutes after your puppy eats, take him for a walk.
A feeding schedule is very important here. That way, the dog can get his body in a routine and will be ready to poo when you walk him.
When potty training your puppy, you also want to make sure he isn’t urinating in the house.
Well, you could always just not give your dog water. Just kidding! That would be cruel. Young puppies should be walked every 3 to 4 hours. As they get older, their bladders are able to hold it better.
You can move to walking him every 5 hours at this point. Eventually, they’ll be able conform to your work schedule and not urinate in the house when you’re gone for a few hours.
Although you have some tips on how to house train your dog, we both know there will be accidents that happen inside the house during this process.
With puppies, you can only discipline them if you actually see them do the deed. If you’re gone at work all day and you come home to a puddle by the back door, you shouldn’t punish them or rub their nose in it.
You don’t know when the accident happened and the dog might not even remember doing it if it happened hours before.
Therefore, they won’t understand what they’re being punished for. In that case, you should clean up the mess and continue to walk to the dog on the schedule that he’s used to.
If you see an accident happen in the house, point it out to your puppy that the it’s unacceptable to go potty in the house and immediately take him outside.
That way, the puppy will relate the idea with going potty with the outdoors. So potty training puppies doesn’t have to be that bad.
dog potty training is an important part of a house training a dog. It is always easier to potty train puppies rather than potty training an adult dog as they pick up habits faster than their adult counterparts.
Potty training also helps your puppy to develop hygienic habits and makes sure that he can differentiate between places he can use as his toilet and places he cannot.
However, you would not want to disturbed at night because your puppy wants to relieve himself.
There are a few things you can do to ensure that your little pet does not wake you up in the middle of the night.
Firstly, you should make sure to feed him well before you put him off to sleep. This will ensure that he relieves himself sometime before sleeping.
Secondly, you should also make it a habit to take your puppy out for a long walk before going off to sleep, so that it can shit and not bother your sleep.
Thirdly, if your puppy decides to poop at night, you can always make a dog gate in your backyard gate. However, you need to make sure that you have designated a place in your backyard for your dog to relieve himself.
However, if you can’t get your puppy to follow any of the above mentioned steps, you can opt for putting a plastic sheet or a paper sheet next to his crate.
This will not only help his relieve himself in the oddest of hours but also let you enjoy your sleep without being disturbed by your whining puppy.
However, you will need to make sure that your puppy does not start using any and every place around his crate as his toilet.
Last but not the least, if none of these work, you can change your habit into one where you get up once at night and take your puppy out into the backyard for taking a shit.
This might not be very difficult for a lot of people as they anyways get up once in the night for having water or relieving themselves.
Though, this should be used only as last resort as this will prevent your puppy from having a good night sleep.
If you have brought home a new canine friend, you have brought in a lot of responsibilities.
You not only need to provide him with the best food, care and other facilities but also with the best dog house training possible.

You can begin with taking it to a particular place everyday and stay there till it does potty and gradually start taking it to the toilet at the same time, especially right after feeding.
It is also advisable to make use of words such as no or bad boy, when your puppy starts relieving itself in wrong places. It is also advisable to use the reward method for potty training.
In other words, you should appreciate your puppy when it goes to the toilet by giving it, its favorite food or favorite toy and taking them away when it fails to do so.
This will make it realize that doing potty in the toilet gets his reward and slowly it will get accustomed to it.
You might need a lot of patience with your puppy while it is being potty trained.
It is also advisable to spread disposable sheets in and around its sleeping and playing area, so that you do not need to put in extra effort of cleaning them during the training.

Try understanding these gestures and associate them with what your puppy might be asking for.
Getting a puppy home is as thrilling an experience and seeing your baby walk for the first time, but there are a few things you need to deal with when you add this fur legged member to your family.
When you get an adult dog home, you can expect him to have learnt something from his previous owner but when you get a puppy in, it is most likely that you will have to have patience and teach him everything right from the scratch.
You will need to put in all your skills of house training a dog in addition to some extra care and patience as this little creature has not had any training as yet.
One of the first things you need your little puppy to learn are mannerism including eliminating outside house.
dog potty training can be hell lot of a task if you do not have much patience as it will need them to behave like humans when they are feeling like potty.
First thing you need to do in this regard is that you can’t be harsh while potty training puppies. You can start with taking your puppy outside for a walk right after you have fed him and make sure you stay out till he lets it out.
Wake him up at the same time every day and make him potty at the same place. This will transform into a habit after a while.
Make him eat food that leads to solid stools during his potty training, so that even if it does potty inside your house, cleaning is not a huge problem.
Appreciate him when he comes in after having relieved himself outside the house. You can also try bribing him with things that he likes after he starts going out for potty and deny them when he does not.
This will make him think that doing potty outside the house is a better thing.
You should also make sure that you leave him in a crate or within dog gates when you are not watching over, so that he learns that he can’t relieve himself anywhere in the house.
You can also take help from puppy training book and videos.
However, if none of these techniques help you with potty training your puppy, you should opt for a professional help at home or take your puppy to puppy training classes.
