Thirdly, if your puppy decides to poop at night, you can always make a dog gate in your backyard gate. However, you need to make sure that you have designated a place in your backyard for your dog to relieve himself.

However, if you can’t get your puppy to follow any of the above mentioned steps, you can opt for putting a plastic sheet or a paper sheet next to his crate.

This will not only help his relieve himself in the oddest of hours but also let you enjoy your sleep without being disturbed by your whining puppy.

However, you will need to make sure that your puppy does not start using any and every place around his crate as his toilet.

Last but not the least, if none of these work, you can change your habit into one where you get up once at night and take your puppy out into the backyard for taking a shit.

This might not be very difficult for a lot of people as they anyways get up once in the night for having water or relieving themselves.

Though, this should be used only as last resort as this will prevent your puppy from having a good night sleep.

This will make it realize that doing potty in the toilet gets his reward and slowly it will get accustomed to it.

You might need a lot of patience with your puppy while it is being potty trained.

It is also advisable to spread disposable sheets in and around its sleeping and playing area, so that you do not need to put in extra effort of cleaning them during the training.

Once your dog starts appreciating the fact that toilet is the right place to go potty, make sure you leave the toilet doors open, especially after your dog has had its meals or when it shows restlessness and starts moving in circles.

Try understanding these gestures and associate them with what your puppy might be asking for.
